- Tourist (30-days)
Designed for those who wish to enter India for leisure, sightseeing, or visiting friends and family:
- Validity: Usually valid for entering India within 30 days from the date of issue.
- Duration: You may enter India for up to 30 days, and come and go a maximum of two times during the 30-day validity.
- Extension: It’s not possible to apply for an extension of stay

- Biodata page of Passport or Travel Document
- Photograph taken within the last six months
- For short term education, copy of letter from the institute concerned on its letter-head
- For short term voluntary work, copy of letter from the organization concerned on its letter-head
Tourist (12-months)
For travelers who wish to stay longer and get in and out of India several times during a 12-month period:
- Validity: Allows multiple entries into India over a 12-month period from the date of issue.
- Duration: Each entry allows a 90-day stay, meaning you can come and go as many times as you want during the 6-month validity, but each stay can’t exceed 90 days. What’s more, the total stay can’t exceed 180 days for a calendar year.
- Extension: It’s not possible to apply for an extension of stay.

Medical (60-days)
For individuals travelling to India for the sole objective to seek medical treatments:
- Validity: Allows a total of three entries into India after issuance, within a 60-day period.
- Duration: You may enter India for up to 60 days, and come and go a maximum of three times during the 60-day validity.
- Extension: Extension may be granted after arrival on a case to case basis and in accordance with the medical institution.
- Biodata page of Passport or Travel Document
- Photograph taken within the last six months
- Copy of Letter from the medical institution in India, which must include the tentative date of admission.
Business (12-months)
Designed for individuals who plan to stay in India for an extended period for various purposes such as business or work:
- Validity: Allows for multiple entries into India over a 12-month period from the date of issue.
- Duration: Once you enter India, you can stay for up to 180 days.
- Extension: This document can be extended after arrival in India on a year-to-year basis
- Biodata page of Passport or Travel Document
- Photograph taken within the last six months
- Letter of Invitation from a company in India
Long-term Documents:
Student: For foreign students enrolled in an educational institution in India. Valid for the duration of the study course, typically up to 5 years, and is renewable..
Research: For foreigners conducting academic research or participating in specialized studies in India. It is issued for the duration of the research, typically up to 3 years, and is extendable.
Journalist: For foreign journalists and media professionals working in India. Typically valid for up to 3 months to 1 year, depending on the nature of the assignment.
Film: For foreign filmmakers and production crews involved in shooting films or TV shows in India. It is valid for up to 1 year or the duration of the project, whichever is shorter.
Spouse: For spouses and dependents of long-term residents, allowing them to stay in India for the same duration as the primary holder.
Intern: Issued to foreign nationals intending to intern with Indian companies or organizations, valid for up to 1 year. Applicants must apply within one year of graduation.
Religious: Granted to foreign nationals wishing to visit India for religious missions. Valid for up to 5 years, but activities must be limited to the mission or organization specified in the application.
Diplomatic: Issued to diplomats and their families for long-term official assignments in India.
